What to do with the bill of sale once it’s printed
New York title transfers go through New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Follow these steps in order.
- Fill in every field on the bill of sale, including the VIN and exact sale price.
- Both seller and buyer sign and date. New York does not require notarization for private vehicle sales.
- Print two copies — one each for buyer and seller.
- If the price is below market value or this is a gift, also complete DTF-802 (Statement of Transaction).
- Buyer brings the signed title, this bill of sale, DTF-802 (if applicable), proof of insurance, and fees to a NY DMV office within 10 days.
