What to do with the bill of sale once it’s printed

New York title transfers go through New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Follow these steps in order.

  1. Fill in every field on the bill of sale, including the VIN and exact sale price.
  2. Both seller and buyer sign and date. New York does not require notarization for private vehicle sales.
  3. Print two copies — one each for buyer and seller.
  4. If the price is below market value or this is a gift, also complete DTF-802 (Statement of Transaction).
  5. Buyer brings the signed title, this bill of sale, DTF-802 (if applicable), proof of insurance, and fees to a NY DMV office within 10 days.
