What to do with the bill of sale once it’s printed

North Carolina title transfers go through North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Follow these steps in order.

  1. Fill in every field on the bill of sale, including odometer reading.
  2. Do NOT sign the title yet — North Carolina requires both buyer and seller to sign the title in front of a notary.
  3. Both parties sign the bill of sale at the same notary visit.
  4. Print two copies — one each for buyer and seller.
  5. Buyer takes the notarized title, this bill of sale, MVR-1 application, and fees to an NCDMV License Plate Agency to title and register.
